We leave Indiana and head to the UP (the Upper Peninsula of Michigan). We decided to go all the way North first because the weather gets pretty crappy up there first, so we wanted to do as much as we could in the UP before we head down state.
Surprisingly, we are greeted with upper 80 degree weather in mid September! We were shocked and pretty excited to have warm weather for our kayak tour. Another reason we headed up to the UP first was the kayaking tours stopped the weekend we were there for the season. It was something we were really excited about doing so we made sure we could before they closed.
We LOVED our kayaking tour. It was our first time kayaking and we fell in love with it. The tour was fun, but it was too fast. I wish we could have slowed down and really explored the area around us.
After the tour we laid low for the next day, we were exhausted from traveling across the country to get to Indiana, and needed a day to rest. Then we headed to Marquette!
Where we explored
Sand Point Beach where garnet has eroded from the sandstone layers of the Pictured Rock cliffs and the garnet washes up on the beach.
Where we stayed
Wandering Wheels Campground (now a KOA) It was lovely, in the woods and fairly private. But super close to everything, which we loved.
Where we ate
The Fish Basket White fish is the delicacy in the UP, it is literally called “white fish” and it comes from Lake Superior. SO fresh and delicious. Sam, the owner catches the fish and cooks it to perfection. If you are in the area it is a MUST stop. Incredible food, service, and a cute dog. 🙌🏽
What we did
Kayaking Pictured Rocks we used “Pictured Rocks Kayaking“, and it was pretty cool. Our tour guide was super nice, but it was a huge tour and it was hard to really know what was going on. Huge bonus was that you take a ferry out to the cool stuff, then you get in the kayak once you get to the good stuff. I think it is worth the extra cash to take a boat out there! We fell in love with kayaking because of this trip, hope we get to come back and do our own long tour.
